Confused about what kind of post-surgical garments you might need after your surgery? Here is a list of the most common types of post-surgical garments, and the particular surgeries that are associated with each garment. Of course, you can also talk to your doctor about the type of post-surgical garment that would make you feel the most comfortable.
Compression Post-Surgical Garments
All post-surgical garments that provide compression provide that compression in a very even and comfortable manner. Instead of clothing that cinches your body, post-surgical garments provide even pressure and hold your body just the way you want it to be held.
Compression and Surgical Bras
If you see the term compression bra or surgical bra, you are looking at the same thing as a post op bra – depending on the brand and focus, they may have a slightly different name, but they’re all meant to be used as post-surgical garments for women. Post-surgical bras are comfortable, the straps are adjustable for the right fit, and they provide compression to help keep the breasts in place, so healing isn’t disturbed by your movements.
Women who use post-surgical bras have usually undergone some form of breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast reconstruction after a mastectomy, breast lift, or breast implant surgery.
Abdominal, Compression Binders
Compression binders are also a very commonly used type of post-surgical garment. They are fairly simple, providing support to the lower abdomen and helping to keep you stable and comfortable after abdominal surgeries, such as hysterectomy, tummy tuck, or liposuction of the belly or flanks.
Post-surgical girdles are the kind of garment that can be worn for just about any type of abdominal or lower body surgery. The tallest girdles are like full-body jump-suits, covering from the ankles to just below the breasts with compression fabric that keeps your skin, organs, and tissues in place. But a post-surgical girdle can also be a garment similar to spandex shorts or even mid-calf shorts. Usually the waistline is much higher than on normal shorts, to keep the waist and belly held tightly, but evenly.
Of all the post-surgical garments, girdles have the widest use. For people who have had tummy tucks and abdominal surgeries of all kinds, a girdle provides the best post-surgical support to the widest area. Other common surgeries include liposuction from the hips, flanks, thighs, buttocks, and belly.
Other Post-Surgical Garments and Aids
Another commonly used post-surgical garment is the silicone scar sheet. Silicone scar sheets are used after breast augmentation surgeries to help the skin heal, reducing and even eliminating scarring where it is needed most. But Silicone scar sheets can also be used on any scar, even old scars that never healed.
If you think you need post-surgical garments to be fully prepared for your recovery, you will find that there are many quality options and that they are reasonably priced.
