Exploring and shopping for post-surgical garments can be stressful. Because how you recover has such a huge effect on your results, we find shopping for recovery garments can be almost as stressful as the surgery itself.
But don’t worry – we’re here to make it easy for you. In this Glossary you’ll find a list of the most common types of post-surgical garments. We will also explain which procedures each garment is required for, so you’re not left guessing. Of course, always chat with your doctor or surgeon about your recovery, since everyone is different, but this should give you a good idea of what garments will be required post-op, and how you can feel most comfortable as you recover.
Compression Post-Surgical Garments
After surgery, it is important to use compression garments at all times. These garments not only help you recover comfortably, but they can speed up the recovery process, prevent infection, and have a lot to do with how your results will present aesthetically after your recovery.
All of our post-surgical garments provide medical grade compression, and this compression is uniformly targeted to the area of recovery.
Or compression post-surgical recovery garments do not pinch or cinch your body. Our post-surgical recovery garments are designed in America with the highest quality materials to provide an even and uniform pressure while holding your body in a comfortable and supportive way.
Compression and Surgical Bras
Compression bras and surgical bras quite often refer to the same product. You can read the description to be sure, as some might offer different levels of compression, but they are most-likely both referring to a post-operative bra. When shopping for compression and surgical bras, some may have different names depending on the band and purpose of the product. Be sure to ask your surgeon about each product you are considering to ensure it is the right selection for your procedure. Surgical or compression bras are designed as post-operative garments for people who have had breast procedures. Like all our compression garments, they are comfortable and the straps are fully adjustable for the right fit. Surgical bras provide even compression to stabilize the breasts. This is so healing is not disturbed by your movements. They also help with drainage, keeping the area infection-free, and provide a comfortable support post-procedure.
Procedures requiring Compression and Surgical Bras include:
- Breast augmentation
- Breast reduction
- Breast reconstruction
- Reconstruction after mastectomy
- Breast lift
- Breast implant surgery
Contact your doctor to find out which surgical bra is right for you.
Abdominal Compression Binders
Compression binders are probably the most commonly used type of post-surgical compression garment. These garments are fairly simple and are designed to provide support to the lower abdomen. This support keeps your body and muscles stable and comfortable. The uniform pressure they supply to the area improves circulation, which can speed up the healing process. They are also worn to facilitate proper drainage, reduce bruising, and as a comfortable and stable garment.
Procedures requiring Abdominal Compression Binders include:
- Tummy tuck
- Liposuction of the belly or flanks
- Other abdominal surgeries
If you have questions about Abdominal Compression Binders, give us a call or talk to your doctor.
While the term “girdle” may resonate more as a garment for women, the modern reference really applies to anyone and any kind of garment that can be worn for abdominal or lower body surgery. There are different heights and lengths of girdles ranging from full-body jumpsuits (covering from the ankles to just below the breast area) to spandex-looking shorts covering just the butt and thigh area. Girdles are designed like our other garments, made in America with the highest quality medical grade compression material. They are designed to keep your skin, organs, and tissues in place as you recover from your surgery. The levels of compression provided by post-surgical girdles can range, depending on what stage of recovery you are in, so be sure to discuss with your doctor which type of girdle is right for your recovery. So you’re not surprised, girdles almost always have a high waistline that helps keep your waist and belly in place with a uniform compression.
Procedures requiring Post-Surgical Girdles include:
- Tummy tuck
- Abdominal surgery
- Liposuction from hips, flanks, thighs, butt, and belly
- Brazilian butt lift
Girdles are very widely used by all sorts of people recovering from surgeries. They provide some of the best post-surgical support to the widest area, so chances are you may be recommended to wear a girdle as you recover. Don’t worry, though, most modern girdles can be worn comfortably under your clothes and actually provide quite an attractive figure.
Other Post-Surgical Garments and Aids
Silicone Scar Sheet
This is an extremely commonly used post-surgical garment. The silicone scar sheet helps treat scars after breast augmentation surgeries to help the skin heal and reduce (or potentially eliminate) scarring. Silicone scar sheets have many uses, and are even used on old scars that were never able to heal. Ask your doctor about silicone scar sheets to find out if they could be right for your recovery.
If you have any type of cosmetic surgery, chances are you will require lipo foam for your recovery. Lipo foam is exactly what it sounds like – a sheet of foam used after procedures (commonly, liposuction), that is placed under your compression garment to provide a smooth compression over the suctioned area. Lipo foam is ideal for use after procedures on the arms, chin, abdomen, or thighs, where uniform healing is required. Lipo foam helps reduce bruising, swelling, and ecchymosis (discoloration of the skin) around the affected areas.
If you are considering cosmetic or some other type of elective surgery/procedure, it is likely that your practitioner will recommend compression or post-surgical garments for your recovery. To be fully prepared for your recovery it is recommended that you purchase two of the same garment or item, as you’ll need to wear one while the other is being cleaned. You’ll find that at ContourMD we provide only the highest quality compression garments and recovery tools as all our products are designed and made here in America using only the best materials. If you have any questions about any of our garments or proper treatment/care of these garments, don’t hesitate to give us a call and it will be our pleasure to help you.
It is our goal to make your recovery as smooth as possible and help you Recover in Comfort.
