According to Psychology Today, everyone is gender-fluid to a degree. That’s because traditionally, people have been expected to behave or look a certain way on the basis of their biological sex. These days, people are becoming more aware of and challenging modes of thinking that make it harder for people to express themselves through dress, style, and other personal choices.

To be clear, people who are gender-fluid generally don’t have a strong attachment to any gender, and may feel more traditionally masculine or feminine depending on the day. Though the phrase gender-fluid is often used interchangeably with nonbinary—not associating with any gender—people who are gender-fluid may or not be nonbinary.

Depending on the way they wish to express themselves, shape-wear may help certain people feel more comfortable.

  • It may enable people to express themselves more fully and affirm their gender or wear drag.

  • It’s less invasive and risky than surgery, and involves less commitment.

  • It allows people to feel more comfortable in their bodies on any given day, and can be done for a prolonged period of time if precautions are taken.

Though shape-wear such as chest binders and other items are temporary, there are a few things to remember.

  • Make sure to use the right size. Loose garments won’t pose much problems, but they’ll be uncomfortable.

  • Tight garments or chest binders can be painful to wear for long periods and can eventually cause breathing issues or skin scarring if worn for days on end.

Here are some

compression garments or shape-wear you can use to change your appearance without surgery.

Chest Binders

There are many reasons why some people consider a chest binder. Often, they will help you present as male by making the chest look flatter, though they’re a common drag, cosplay, and role-play. Wearing a chest binder can also be helpful for people who have chest dysphoria.

Layering shirts, kinetic tape, and wearing sports bras are common ways to bind one’s chest, but commercial chest binders come in many sizes, colors, and designs. The most common you will find anywhere include:

  • Tops that look like sports bras

  • Compression chest binders cut off at the belly button

  • Binders that go all the way down to your waist

Girdles

Girdles were traditionally a women’s only item and often worn to cinch one’s waist and change one’s shape. They’re often associated with people who want to present as female, as girdles flatten the belly and accentuate hips. Some can even help you reduce the appearance of back fat and love-handles depending on how high up they go.

Girdles are still a handy item to keep around if you’re agender, as they are generally easy to remove depending on the kind you buy.

Common types include:

  • Slimmer thongs

  • Boy short girdles

  • Shape-wear bras (commonly used to smooth out back fat)

  • Mid-thing shapers (scuba suits)

Full Body Compression Suits

These compression suits often reach from your shoulders to the bottom of your thighs to make you look leaner overall. They come in a variety of materials and designs. Some of these have openings in the fly area to better help you go to the bathroom and resemble the look of rompers. Others look almost like dresses.

Drag Queen Gender Fluid person in a dressSafety Tips for Choosing a Girdle or Full-body Shape-wear

Shape-wear can better help you feel more authentic in your gender expression and can help you accentuate or diminish the appearance of some of your features. It’s critical that you find one that fits you just right so you can avoid some of the common risks associated with them, such as:

  • Skin irritation caused by the chemicals used to make materials so stretchy or by wearing the shape-wear for too long.

  • Constriction of blood. Shape-wear won’t cause permanent damage to your body, but it can cut off your blood circulation and even cause acid reflux if it’s too tight. Make sure your shape-wear isn’t leaving any marks on your skin. If it is, choose the next bigger size.

Finding the right shape-wear, regardless of which is right for you, will take a few tries. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or experiment, and as always please reach out to us with any questions and we’ll help you find your perfect fit.

Looking to change your appearance without spending months hitting the gym or opting for the more expensive cosmetic surgery route? Shapewear could be your new contouring best friend. Think of it as an instant fix without permanent commitment or cost.

Let’s start by covering a few basics. Shapewear isn’t meant to permanently alter your physical appearance and it certainly isn’t meant to be worn continuously. When fitted correctly, shapewear can even be, dare we say, comfortable? In fact, many people are using shapewear on a regular basis to enhance their natural appearance and change their body shape appearance without expensive surgery.

What is Shapewear?

People of all ages and physiques are flocking to shapewear to help achieve their desired body aesthetic. Whether you’re looking for more curves, less curves, accents in the right places, or simply a flatter midsection, shapewear can help you achieve this goal.

If you’re completely new to the concept of compression and/or shapewear, let us fill you in. Shapewear is a type of compression garment that can be worn by both patients after surgery and those who are simply looking for a comfortable, easy-to-wear product that improves their natural shape and contour. And we’ll quickly note that shapewear does not have the same medical compression capabilities as, say, Stage I or Stage II compression garments that you would use after procedures like liposuction or cosmetic surgery. It has more give making it ideal for daily wear.

Shapewear can be a long-term solution for those who have received some sort of cosmetic surgery or are looking to maintain and emphasize their body’s shape. For example, shapewearcan be worn as a means of gender affirmation, to look more feminine, to look more androgynous, or to look more masculine. There are many non-surgical options out there, you just need to find the one that works for you. We’ve touched a little on how shapewear can help you achieve your desired aesthetic, but let’s expand on this topic by going over some more specific shapewear pieces that help you achieve a specific goal.

Changing Your Body Shape

As we’ve mentioned, spending hours in the gym and dieting with seemingly no end in sight may get you closer to where you want to be but it’s not instant and you still may never get the lines you’re looking for. Achieving, not to mention maintaining, a flat stomach is extremely difficult for some people. There is both physical and mental strain and it’s not always something you can maintain long term. But if you want to look and feel your best, there are alternatives to slaving away in the gym and kitchen.

People of all ages and physiques are flocking to shapewear to help achieve their desired body aesthetic. Whether you’re looking for more curves, less curves, accents in the right places, or simply a flatter midsection, shapewear can help you achieve this goal. You can’t choose where your body likes to hold fat, but you can choose the garments and undergarments you wear to accent your body the way you like it.

Use shapewear to change your body shape for special occasions under dress clothing (psst, all celebrities do this for every A-list event) or find pieces that work for your wardrobe on a regular basis. We’ll be here to help with any questions along the way.

Gender Affirming Shapewear

Another major benefit to shapewear is its versatility. There are many different types of shapewear for many different purposes. Gender affirmation is one of them. Whether you are currently transitioning or simply want to enhance your appearance to best suit your true gender, shapewear can help you achieve your goals.

From binders and abdominal boards to appear more masculine or bodysuits and brief shapers or girdles to appear more feminine, shapewear can do it all. If you have questions about which pieces could be right to help you achieve your desired look, please let us know and our expert staff would be happy to help!

How to Look More Feminine

Shapewear can help you achieve a classic hourglass shape by cinching the areas that are traditionally more “masculine” like the waist, and helping to provide a more curvy silhouette. Click the image to browse our entire collection of shapers, girdles and bras.

Our full bodysuits which help create the illusion of an hourglass shape & provide easy access when nature calls. Can be worn with inserts or without.

High waisted girdles can help you contour a more shapely derriere without costly surgery or hours doing squats. Add in hip and thigh pads to increase the curves. Click below to see our girdle collection.

If you want to enhance your upper body, we suggest our bra shapers, which can be worn with inserts or with your natural figure. Available in multiple shades and custom sizes to fit you.

How to Look More Androgynous

Many of our shapewear pieces can also be used to achieve an androgynous look that helps you to feel comfortable in your own body, which is the ultimate goal!

If you want to go for a more hourglass androgynous shape, consider using one of our bodysuits which come in a variety of fits and styles to work with your life.

You may also consider high waisted options with a bra top. These individual pieces are easy options together or separate.

If you’re going for a more squared off look, consider using a
binder
abdominal board
compression vest

These options, worn daily under your regular clothing can provide you with an outward appearance that more geniunely reflects who you are.

How to Look More Masculine

If your goal is to reduce your curves, there are plenty of options. Depending on the goal you will find our compression & shapewear vests to be a great option for day to day wear.

Our abdominal boards can also help you reduce the appearance of curves under your clothes comfortably as well as our custom fitted binders which can be worn however you choose.

As you can see, shapewear helps us achieve way more than just compression and smoothing fine lines under clothing. It helps us to be who we really are and embrace our identity through the clothing we enjoy wearing, and provides confidence in our appearances. No matter what any “wellness coach” might say, feeling comfortable in your own skin is hard to do. Anything that helps us to be comfortable with our appearance is an investment worth making, in our opinion.

Investing in shapewear pieces that suit your lifestyle and wardrobe can help achieve so much more than just a sleeker appearance. It can provide peace of mind knowing we’re venturing out into the world as who we are truly meant to be, and that is a good feeling! If you have questions about shapewear or want to learn more about what pieces might be right for your body type, don’t hesitate to send us a message or check out our website here

Daily Compression Wear

Do you wear compression wear? This gear is a staple in many people’s daily wardrobe whether it’s for working out, shaping their body under their clothing (shapewear), or as a medical device for a number of purposes. High performance athletes wear compression wear for improved performance, but you don’t need to be a sports star to wear compression wear on a regular basis.

In fact, there are many benefits to wearing compression gear regularly. But, like anything else, before you get started you should know your options and know whether compression wear might be a good option for you to wear every day.

What is compression wear?

All of our garments are Made in America by our team of expert Seamstresses.

Compression wear might look like a tight or sleek sports garments or a silky undergarment with a slight sheen to it. The material is woven very tightly and consistently in order to provide a comfortable support while restricting the movement of your body. These garments give a feeling of support to your body’s tissues while you are moving around or working out, which many find to be comfortable.

And don’t worry, you can move around without restriction. If you can’t there is a chance your compression wear is way too tight.

Types of compression wear

There are different types or “grades” of compression wear depending on how tightly the fabric is woven. Compression wear that is designed for daily use tends to be woven slightly less tight in order to provide enough comfortable compression while still allowing ease of movement and unrestricted support.

Compression wear that is “medical grade” is woven more tightly as it is designed to be worn after surgery or as a medical device for a specific purpose with regards to circulation. These types of medical grade garments should be recommended by your physician before use, as compression wear isn’t necessarily safe for everybody if you have underlying conditions.

Sports wear and shapewear compression are likely not medical grade but you can check with a sales representative if you’re unsure.

Compression wear for daily use

In addition to compression wear for athletes, compression wear for daily use can be beneficial to those with extra weight or extra skin on their body, as it provides a unique type of support that is not often found in other types of clothing.

Not only does compression wear provide support for your body as you go about your daily routine, it helps improve circulation throughout the area of use. So if you spend a lot of time on your feet, wearing daily compression wear or shapewear on your lower half could be beneficial to help you keep your blood flowing.

As a result, at the end of a long day you may feel “fresher” than you have previously, since your body has been circulating blood and repairing any muscle fatigue or micro tears that would normally have occurred on a regular basis.

Buying compression wear for daily use

There’s more to buying compression wear than just selecting a tight garment or piece of clothing that feels “too small”. As mentioned, compression garments shouldn’t be too tight or feel like they’re cutting off your circulation. As a result, high quality compression gear will always be custom sized. You will need to take your measurements and apply them using a sizing chart provided by the company you’ll be ordering your compression gear from.

The type of compression wear that you choose to buy will depend on your body’s measurements and your goals for getting the wear. An easy way to get started is through compression tights or shorts, as your lower half is required for most day-to-day activities that may benefit from compression wear.

These garments tend to also provide a smoother and sometimes “ideal” silhouette. Whether this was your intention for selecting shapewear to wear on a daily basis, or a nice additional benefit of your compression wear for health purposes, it’s a nice additional feature of the garments.

Be sure to check out pieces like the following, to get started:

Abdominal Panty Girdle 4in Waist Closed Crotch – Our Abdominal Panty Girdle provides a uniform comfort underneath your regular or gym clothing. The high quality Lycra Spandex material makes it a comfortable material for daily use and the laced front panel laced provides a nice feminine pattern.

Slip On Mid Thigh Girdle Closed Crotch – This slip on high quality Lycra fabric with reinforced abdominal panel provides a great amount of support for daily activity. Holding your body’s shape comfortably, this compression wear is ideal for daily use. The soft lace trims the mid-thigh for a beautiful design.

Alright, alright… alright? We’re not Matthew McConaughey, but we know when there’s a clear need for a product in a market and honestly, shapewear for men has been a long time coming.

Whether it is for your own comfort after surgery or for a little extra “smooth factor” under the suit and tie, shapewear for men is here to stay. When the diet is lacking and you don’t have hours a day to focus on exercise, men everywhere are turning to shapewear to provide a controlled and slimmed appearance under their regular or work clothing.

Are you still wondering what exactly shapewear even is? No worries. We’ve got you covered. Shapewear is a compressive garment designed to be worn under clothing to enhance your appearance or lend some of the benefits that compression provides to the body. These garments can help reduce the appearance of beer bellies or “man boobs” if you are uncomfortable with your appearance or simply want some stability in those areas.

Shapewear can also help sculpt your body, promotes blood flow and circulation (meaning quicker recovery times from your workouts), and is a useful tool if you have undergone any type of surgical procedure like liposuction.

Other benefits of shapewear for men

Wearing shapewear and enjoying a more slim appearance may give you a little ego boost, as you’ll look like you just dropped a few lbs overnight. This can work wonders for your confidence and attitude, whether you’re giving a presentation at work, meeting over Zoom or celebrating a special event.

Shapewear garments also offer various levels of support that are unique to your body. For example, wearing shapewear that smooths the stomach can also help improve your posture, due to the compression. This, in turn, will reduce lower back pressure and can make sitting at your desk much more comfortable.

These garments are also worn for post-surgery support to keep everything in place as your muscles recover and heal in their proper areas.

You can also wear shapewear to the gym, as the compression helps circulation which can improve your workouts. You can also wear shapewear to enjoy the extra support it provides for a tired or overworked back.

And, once you get used to pulling it on and off, shapewear for men is actually pretty darn comfortable. Garments a custom made to your measurements and slide effortlessly underneath an outfit so that no one would know you are wearing it unless you told them! By choosing custom fitted shapewear, you’re guaranteed the right size of shapewear, knowing it will stay put and smooth out your appearance while providing a comfortable level of support so you can go about your daily routine with no interruption.

What types of shapewear are available for men?

ContourMD has a number of different styles of shapewear for men. Each style serves its own unique purpose, so if you have questions that aren’t answered here or are stuck between two garments, don’t hesitate to reach out to us and we would be happy to help. Here’s a great overview to help you get comfortable with how shapewear can benefit you.

The Power Vest – This vest provides reinforced comfort and compression with adjustable shoulder straps for a custom fit. No need to worry about underarm binding as there is complete freedom of movement with this product. Wear men’s shapewear vests every day under your clothing as a solution to “man boobs” and to help flatten the appearance of your chest/stomach area. Plus, no fat or extra skin can escape from under the arms with this product. With a higher level of compression, this product can be used by those who have recently completed surgeries, or by experienced shapewear users.

The Brief (high waist) – Often those who use the brief will enjoy extra back support and a reduced appearance of their midsection. These briefs provide a lifting and shaping property along with some belly control that will hide a beer or sugar belly. Comfortable to wear under any clothes, these briefs also help avoid chaffing of the legs during hot weather, and any friction your waistbands or belts may create. With a custom fit and buttery soft finish, it’s perfect for daily wear.

The Body Shaper (full body) – One of our more “full coverage” products, the body shaper can be used both post-surgery and on a regular basis when worn under suits or other clothes. This garment is both comfortable and properly compressive in all the right places. With adjustable shoulders straps for a customized fit, height is no issue!

The Compression Vest – This vest provides comfort and style. Available in both black and white colors, it is a perfect addition to any wardrobe as it is virtually indistinguishable from a regular undershirt. This product can be used regularly or after a surgical procedure, as it offers a higher level of compression. Easy to get in and out of and also does not push any underarm skin out the top.

What’s Next

Consider the purpose of your compression garment before purchasing. Are you mainly looking for support in the mid-section? The high-waisted brief is probably right for you, then. If you are looking for more upper body support in the pectoral or shoulder region, you can consider any of our vests. We even have one with sleeves, here

For a complete list of our male shapewear products, check here

Like any custom made clothing, buying the right size of shapewear can make a world of difference. Our handy sizing guide is rarely ever wrong, but make sure you have all your most recent, up-to-date measurements when selecting your garment. If you’re in-between sizes or unsure of what garment to buy, don’t hesitate to reach out to our expert staff at ContourMD. We’re a family-run business so customer service is in our blood!

There is no better time to celebrate your body than today! We appreciate every body and that’s why ContourMD has been making compression and shapewear products since 1982. Our goal is to help you feel comfortable while accentuating your body in all the right places.

Did You Know?

Literally ALL celebrities wear shapewear at important events to maintain a flatter stomach and to help smooth their bra and underwear lines but shapewear isn’t just for red carpet or recovery, it’s a useful tool to help you feel confident that you look your best. That’s why we have created this guide to help you find the best fit for your unique curves.

Let’s Get Started

Understanding your body shape is important because it will help determine what area to accentuate through shapewear. Do you want to smooth your natural silhouette? Maybe you’d like to accentuate those curves? Shapewear will help showcase your natural form and have you looking and feeling your best in no time. No matter what you want to accentuate, we have a shapewear for you.

Check Your Measurements

Knowing your basic measurements like height and weight will help when shopping online. Most compression garments will use these two metrics to get a good idea of the level of compression you’ll need. It’s important that your shapewear is not too tight, as it can roll down or up and can be uncomfortable. A tighter/smaller size won’t make you look smaller; it will be more likely to look lumpy.

Depending on the type of garment you’re considering may need to know your chest, waist, thigh, bra, or hip measurements. We have a handy sizing chart available here for you to use (it’s almost never wrong!) but you’d rather have a personal stylist, our expert staff is happy to help you find the right pieces. We will even send you a FREE TAPE MEASURE if you fill out our form!

Dangerous Curves Ahead

There’s a variety of different levels of compression among shapewear garments. We picked a few of our most versatile shapewear options to give you a custom fit and a great value. Here your guide to a well-rounded shapewear collection for your closet. Click each item to learn more!

Great for layering under the sheerest of outfits.

Smooth Shaping Panties ─ Shaping panties help make wearing waistbands comfortable again! Keeping a protective barrier between your skin and your waistband, shaping panties also help smooth the stomach area under shirts or blouses creating a flawless look now matter what you’re wearing.

Modern Biker Shorts ─ Who doesn’t love a good pair of high-waisted biker shorts? This 90s staple has been making a comeback in recent years. These are perfect accessories under dresses and rompers. Resources and Information for Plastic Surgery Aftercare

Aside from the surgery itself, recovery from plastic surgery is the most important part of the procedure. Whether you desire plastic surgery for aesthetics or reconstruction, it is a serious medical procedure and aftercare shouldn’t be taken lightly. The best way to see desired results from plastic surgery is to follow the instructions of your physician(s) while taking care of yourself throughout the recovery process. Before your surgery, your surgeon will provide instructions and information with regards to what to expect, how to prepare, and how to ensure a speedy and smooth recovery. And while everyone’s surgery, and subsequent recovery, will be different, there are some general rules of thumb to follow to make sure it goes smoothly.

Recovery from Plastic Surgery

Depending on the type of surgery/procedure you are undergoing, you might be recovering as little as a day, or as long as 8+ weeks until you feel like yourself again. Whatever the recommended recovery time, it is important to remember that you just had a surgical procedure and should spend this time resting. Rest is crucial to achieving optimal results after plastic surgery, as you are allowing your body to focus on healing. Your doctor will provide detailed instructions on the type of surgery and aftercare that you need to adhere to following your cosmetic procedure. It’s important you follow these instructions as closely as possible to ensure optimal results. You may feel like you need more rest than what is recommended – that is fine, but just remember that if you’re feeling “good” not to overdo it and don’t return to your regular activities until your doctor advises that it is safe to do so. Post-op you will want to move slowly, take things “easy”, and don’t push past your limits. Listen to your body and give it the rest it needs. Some specific instructions you might receive include not going into the sun, bathing a certain way, drinking plenty of water/limiting alcohol, and eating healthy foods. Your doctor may prohibit certain activities or recommend various recovery garments to speed the healing process.

Post-Surgery Accessories

You might need compression gear or cold compresses to help reduce swelling after plastic surgery. There are also recommended supplements, like arnica, to help with inflammation and pain management. Wearing a compression garment or post-op recovery aid could be required to help speed the recovery process while keeping you as comfortable as possible, of course. This helps lessen the bruising, provide a uniform compression, and lessen discomfort during the healing process. ContourMD offers a wide range of post-op compression and recovery garments for each stage of recovery: Stage 1, immediately following the operation; Stage 2, the “middle” stage; and Stage 3, when you are almost fully recovered. Recommended garments and accessories will vary depending on the type of procedure you undergo.

Plastic Surgery Aftercare Overview

First and foremost, remember to listen to your doctors’ instructions with regards to plastic surgery aftercare. They are there to help you throughout the process by performing the surgery itself and also for post-op check-ins and to monitor your recovery. To ensure a speedy and uncomplicated recovery, follow your doctors’ instructions and ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable.

Arm cosmetic surgery is also referred to as an arm lift or a brachioplasty. This is the process of removing excess skin and fat from the triceps and underarm areas. This creates a tighter and smoother appearance for the upper arm, which looks more toned and youthful. The reality is that as we age, no matter how much we exercise, our skin loses elasticity; and this one area of the body where it is noticeable.

Following an arm lift, it is likely that you will benefit from wearing arm cosmetic surgerycompression sleeves. These garments help to reduce swelling and often they are used in conjunction with drainage tubes to help excess fluid drain away from the incisions sites. Allowing for this drainage helps to prevent complications that can arise post surgery.

Compression sleeves come in long and short sleeve varieties. Your doctor will be able to tell you which option is better for you. There are also vests and bras that can be purchased for specific surgical procedures, if you have more than one process done at the same time.

Arm cosmetic surgery compression sleeves are just one part of the healing and recovery process from an arm lift. Your doctor is going to give you clear and specific post-op instructions that will be specific based on your personal needs. It is imperative that you follow these instructions in order to ensure that your healing process goes as smoothly as possible.

Their directions will let you know how you keep the surgical site clean, what medication you need to take, how to prevent possible infection, what you need to watch out for, and when you need to follow up with your surgeon. The most important thing that you can do for your healing process is to take the time that you need. Rest, relax, and allow your body to heal itself.

What is a surgical girdle?

In general, a surgical or compression girdle is a form of supportive recovery garment that is worn to improve circulation/blood flow; reduce bruising and swelling; and reduce scarring while improving recovery. A surgical girdle is typically recommended for patients recovering from abdominal or midsection surgeries including (but not limited to) liposuction of the butt, abdomen, flanks, hips, or thighs, a Brazilian butt lift, tummy tuck, lipoplasty, or thigh lift. That may seem like a long list, but surgical girdles are very useful and multipurpose garments! A surgical girdle is recommended during the healing stage as plastic surgeons agree, wearing compression garments after surgery can improve healing time and aid in producing more desirable results of the procedure.

Different Types of Surgical Girdles

There are a number of types of surgical girdles to consider, depending on the type of procedure you’re undergoing. They can go from your waist to your ankles, or they can be short (only extending to your lower thighs). And while the bottoms of girdles can vary significantly depending on the procedure, they’ll almost always be high waisted (ending just below the breasts) to provide support to your abdominal muscles. You can shop for girdles by stage 1 (most compression), stage 2 (less compression), or stage 3 (least compression), or by surgical procedure, as there will be different lengths/styles recommended to you by your surgeon. They range in price anywhere from $70 dollars to $175, depending on length and level of compression. It is always recommended to have at least 2 girdles for each stage of recovery, since the garment is meant to be worn continuously. So by having 2 of each product you are able to wash your girdle while adhering to the schedule for optimal recovery. Even taking just an hour or two off for washing the garment is not recommended. Depending on your needs there are girdles with different lengths, different closures (zipper or surgical, with no closures), and open crotch surgical girdles, as well. Your doctor will advise which products will be best for your needs and how often to wear them.

Getting the Proper Advice for Surgical Girdles

Depending on the procedure, your doctor will recommend a specific recovery plan, including which garments to consider and when/how often to wear them. For abdominal surgeries like tummy tucks, liposuction, or hysterectomy, you will need a girdle that covers the abdomen, like the Mid Thigh Underbust Pull On Body Garment. If you need more support, something like the Mid Calf Body Garment Pull On Slit Crotch might be more effective. You can go through these options with your doctor and they will be able to advise you on which girdle would be most appropriate for your needs, depending on the procedure you are undergoing.

Surgical Girdles Overview

Overall, you’ll want to discuss this first and foremost with your doctor/surgeon since they know exactly what is involved with the procedure and the recovery. Even if it is not 100% necessary that you wear a girdle, or you are in the later stages of recovery, you may find it more comfortable and secure to do so, which is completely fine! Just double check with your doctor before purchasing, to ensure you’re getting the right level of compression.
