Will you need surgical garments?

If you are planning for liposuction, you have probably heard that there are special garments that people wear after lipo. These are often called surgical garments, compression binders, or surgical girdles. The process of healing, and the correct healing, after a surgery like lipo can be helped if you find the right kind of garment to wear after lipo. Here are some of the most popular options and types to consider in the market of garments after lipo.

Compression or Surgical Girdles

A surgical girdle is a specific kind of post-op garment that is worn by people after lipo. No matter how good your doctor is, you’ll still need to go through a period of healing and recuperation when you arrive home after your lipo procedure. One of the major concerns is that the skin will be stretched and that your body will not heal in the shape that you want it to. Compression garments after lipo help to hold your skin, organs, and tissues in place so that they heal together in a way that looks great. And since the whole idea behind getting lipo is to look great, this can be an important part of the process.

Girdles are like leggings, shorts, or body suits that are made of special materials which put an appropriate amount of pressure on your body. They can keep the abdomen flat and the thighs and buttocks tight in a way that is flattering and also comfortable. Many people find that a compression garment after lipo is also very comforting because this garment for after lipo helps hold together stitches and helps you to heal cleanly.

Abdominal Binders

Another popular type of garment worn after lipo is the abdominal binder. Abdominal binders work in a similar way to girdles and compression garments after lipo, but they are only meant to cover the lower abdomen. This is a garment after lipo that is really easy to remove and put back on, which makes it very convenient, especially if you have reduced flexibility due to the liposuction. They provide the same kind of compression and support as other surgical garments after lipo, but they only cover the lower abdomen.

How do Surgical Garments Help?

The majority of surgical garments for after lipo are designed to provide support, compression, and comfort. The support helps keep your body looking the way you want it to, supporting tissues that are recovering from the liposuction. Compression aids in healing and increases circulation so that fluids do not pool and distort your new body. And after surgery and liposuction, having a garment that is so supportive can be a great comfort. You can rest easy, knowing that you are doing everything you can to help the recovery happen smoothly and as well as it can. Garments after lipo are a great way to keep yourself healthy and comfortable during recovery. Then when you emerge from the garments after lipo, you’ll look like a brand new you!

Resources and Info on Liposuction Recovery Tips

While liposuction is by far one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, recovery is still just as important as the procedure itself. Because of how common its become, the risk factors have been greatly reduced because of developments and advancements in the medical field, but you still need to take time and care of your body after surgery to ensure a swift and SAFE recovery.

Potential Risks

Now, (not to scare you or anything) but any time you undergo surgery there are always associated risks factors. Liposuction is no different. One of the main issues or risks with regards to liposuction procedures is adema. This is when fluid collects under the incision site which can lead to discomfort, swelling, and more serious issues. However, if proper steps to recovery are taken this risk can be greatly reduced, with the help of your surgeon (but it’s on you to follow through with their instructions)!

How to Recover Quickly

To prevent adema after your liposuction treatment, by leaving incisions open afterwards and combined with compression garments, the fluid can drain out and not collect/create discomfort. Using compression garments also begins the healing process more quickly and the uniform pressure is often quite comfortable. This process allows the body to heal without stitches. The open drainage allows for less bruising and swelling, which also speeds up the recovery time from liposuction procedures. Many patients feel completely back to normal (without lipo-related issues) after about four weeks. In fact, many people return to work after ~3-5 days of rest. Compression garments absolutely are credited for this speedy return and allow you to return to light activity with less discomfort.

The Stages of Recovery

As you may have seen on the ContourMD website, there are three stages of recovery from a liposuction procedure. There are different recommended compression garments and recovery accessories at each stage, to allow you to recover as quickly and comfortably as possible.

Stage 1
In the first 1-2 weeks after surgery you will notice that the first few days are the worst and you should feel a gradual but steady improvement in soreness. You’ll have pain medication for the first few days and further instructions from your surgeon that pertain to you specifically, because everyone recovers differently. In general, this is the stage where you will wear the tightest compression garments for support of your muscles, to encourage proper drainage at incision sites, and to speed the recovery. It is important to wear these garments as per your doctor or surgeon as they not only help with recovery but also with achieving your desired aesthetic appearance post-procedure. If you have a sedentary job (like a desk job) many people can return to work after 1-2 weeks, but if you have a physically demanding job you may need to schedule more time for recovery or ask for an alternate task for a while.

Stage 2
Weeks 3-5 are considered Stage 2 at ContourMD. You’ll have had your first follow up appointment with your doctor or surgeon by this time and they will have provided further instruction to you based on your current recovery. Compression garments are still worn during this time but you can usually switch to a lighter, less bulky compression that can be worn easily under your clothes. After one month you likely won’t feel any pain but may have some slight swelling still. You’ll also start to see the visible results from your procedure (which will continue to “appear” more as the swelling subsides). Heavy activities should still be avoided but many people return to light, low impact exercise at this time.

Stage 3
Beyond 5 weeks is usually where you’ll see the full results of your liposuction surgery. If you’ve been religious about wearing your compression, most of the swelling and bruising should have subsided. Many people choose to wear a very light compression garment at this point, if you feel you still need support or it is advised by your surgeon, but some people are also fine to go without one.

Liposuction Recovery Overview

Remember that everyone recovers differently and sees different results from this procedure. You will work directly with your surgeon and monitor your post-op recovery that is tailored to your body’s needs. The stages mentioned above are a generalized process of what recovery is like for the majority of liposuction patients. Your recovery may be slower to return to “normal” or you may feel better sooner if compression works well for you. Whatever you do though, do not rush your return to strenuous activity and be sure to rest up, get a lot of sleep, eat healthy foods, and provide your body with the love it needs!

Resources & Information for Compression Garments After Liposuction

After most cosmetic surgery or liposuction procedures, compression garments are required. There are a number of benefits and reasons it is recommended to wear compression post-surgery, the main ones being that it is comfortable and helps speed the recovery process while achieving the desired cosmetic results. Here we will provide some tips and information on using Compression Garments after liposuction, as it is especially important to wear them after this procedure.

Before Surgery

Pre-op, your doctor will explain what exactly will be involved in the procedure, how to prepare, and what post-operative/post-procedure care will look like. Of course, listen to your surgeon’s specific directions to ensure a correct and swift recovery. Many patients who are new to liposuction or have not read about the procedure are unaware of the need for compression garments post-procedure. Your surgeon will explain everything, including how they will help with recovery and why you should be prepared with your garments before going into the procedure.

Why Compression?

The main purpose of wearing compression after liposuction is to help the healing process. Compression garments are exactly what they sound like. They are snug, form-fitting garments, that will add a uniform, external pressure to the area where liposuction incisions have been made. By wearing compression, this external pressure helps keep the swelling down, can stop excessive bruising from happening, all while keeping the circulation in your body moving swiftly. Plus, it can be extremely comfortable to wear after these procedures.

What Types of Compression do I Need?

There are many types of compression available from pantyhose, socks, full-body garments, sleeves, tops, and more. All of these garments are designed to be worn exactly on the area that has been treated, to help speed up the healing process in this area. For liposuction, there are even types of compression garments that can be customized with drainage tubes. This helps to provide comforting external pressure to the treatment area while helping to flush excess fluid out of the body. Your surgeon will also recommend specific compression garments depending on your specific needs post-procedure. For example, there are compression garments with different amounts of pressure/compression for the different stages of recovery. Your doctor will help you select what type of garment is best for you.

How Long Should I Wear Compression?

After liposuction, you can expect to be in recovery an average of 8 weeks however it is sometimes more, sometimes less. There are various stages of recovery and different levels of compression to be worn at each stage. The most important thing to do after a liposuction procedure is to get some rest! Compression garments will be worn immediately after the procedure and for several weeks after. Your exact schedule will be discussed directly with your surgeon. At your first checkup after your procedure, your surgeon will likely get you to wear a compression garment with a lower amount of compression. We would call this Stage 2 of Recovery. In Stage 2, garments are less bulky than initial compression garments and are easier to hide under your everyday clothing. Since you’ll likely feel more recovered at this stage and may return to light activity, you’ll want a compression garment that works with your lifestyle.

Compression Overview

Post-liposuction compression garments are almost as important as the procedure itself. Not only do they help you recover more quickly and comfortably, they are instrumental in supporting your muscles while helping you achieve your desired aesthetic result. Before you know it, you’ll be on the move as your new happy, healthy self.
