About Breast Reduction
Breast Reduction is also known as Reduction Mammaplasty.
Women with overly large, prominent breasts usually suffer from back and neck pain, skin irritation, deep shoulder grooves, limited mobility, and unwanted attention.
The procedure is designed to reduce the size of the breasts to give the body a more proportionate appearance.
Once you’ve decided that breast reduction is the best fit to properly address your unique needs and concerns, your surgeon and the medical team will have a conversation with you about your recovery during the pre-op appointment and on the day of your surgery.
The recovery period after breast reduction surgery is vital to achieving your long-term aesthetic goals – as the surgery itself. If you are not sure where to start, ContourMD® is here to help. The design of our breast reduction compression garments are tailored to compliment your aesthetic goals and individual anatomy.
The Stages of Healing
Learn about the stages of healing and what your body goes through after surgery to understand why the right breast reduction compression garment is critical to reaching the results you are looking for.
Stage I Garment
4 to 6 weeks after surgery
The healing process begins immediately after your breast reduction surgery.
Once the procedure is finished, bandages, a compression garment and surgical drains are placed and adjusted to ensure proper fit by the surgeon or someone from the medical team. It is very beneficial to rest, relax, and let your body heal properly after surgery.
A Stage I breast reduction compression garment promotes healing by lessening the amount of fluid build-up, reducing swelling, and preventing bruising. It can provide stability to the treated areas, while also keeping the surgical site together. This will improve the outcome of the body’s contour, and minimize the appearance of scarring. The compression garment will also reduce the risk of infection. During Stage I, you should wear this garment at all times, except when you’re either bathing or in the shower.

Stage II Garment
2 to 4 weeks after surgery
Gradually, as you recover you should notice less and less fluid in the tissues.
This is when you will want to switch to Stage II for your breast reduction compression garments.
A Stage II compression garment will help in keeping optimal compression on the treated area(s). This should improve your comfort level significantly, so you’re able to return to some lighter activities. Before your surgery, your plastic surgeon will go through all of this with you, and will also be given detailed post-op instructions. If instructions are followed and your breast reduction garment is properly worn, there will be noticeable and immediate improvement. It is crucial to wear your compression garment after surgery to achieve optimal results.

How to Care for Your Compression Garment
In order to ensure our compression technology can perform at its peak, be sure to set a reminder to clean or launder your compression garment every one to two days.
For a longer garment life span and for proper compression maintenance, Variance is recommended by medical professionals for garment cleaning.
During the healing process, there will be less fluid in the tissues. This is when you will want to switch to a more simple gynecomastia compression garment to ensure your full recovery. Remember to clean or launder your compression garment every one to two days. Lastly, there are several different styles of breast surgery and breast reduction garments. These options are provided to cater to each of your individual preferences.

Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction usually takes around three to five hours to complete, and is performed under general anesthesia. There are multiple approaches to the breast reduction surgery. Depending on the type of correction, the surgery usually involves removing excess skin and breast tissue through one of three different incision techniques, which include the periareolar incision, lollipop incision or the anchor incision. The nipples are then lifted and the skin is tightened. Sometimes liposuction is utilized to remove additional fat from the breasts.
When your surgical procedure is finished, a compression garment is placed by the surgeon or someone from the medical team. The surgeon prescribes pain medication(s) to minimize any discomfort after surgery. Patients will experience some swelling and bruising, but this will subside within a few weeks. Depending on your surgeons instructions, it usually takes around six weeks to recover. It is also important to refrain from any strenuous activity for up to ten weeks.
What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction brings the breast size into a better balance with the rest of your body. The surgery removes excess skin, fat and breast tissue, while also decreasing the size of the areolas and elevating the nipples.
