Breast implant removal is performed under general anesthesia, and the surgery usually takes around one to three hours. During the surgical procedure, the original incision is reopened where the implant was placed. Once the implant is removed, if it is deemed necessary your surgeon may need to excise part of the scar tissue that surrounds the implant. Sometimes patients will also choose to get breast revision or implant replacement during their breast implant removal surgery. After the desired results are achieved, your incisions will be closed and you will be wrapped in a surgical dressing.

When your surgical procedure is completely finished, a compression garment and drains are placed by the surgeon or someone from the medical team. The surgeon prescribes pain medication(s) to minimize any discomfort after surgery. Depending on your surgeons instructions, it usually takes around a week to recover, but complete healing may take up to four to six weeks. It is also important to refrain from any strenuous activity for about a month or so.
